The Path.

The union apprenticeship is the gold standard — earn while you learn, no debt, progressive wage increases. Here's the honest step-by-step for the UBC — Millwright Local path.

1

Apply to a UBC Millwright Local — millwrights are chartered under the United Brotherhood of Carpenters but are their own distinct trade. Find your local UBC millwright lodge through carpenters.org.

2

Apply to the apprenticeship — 4 years, 8,000 OJT hours. The application covers basic mechanical aptitude, math, and a physical. Millwright apprenticeships are competitive; the trade is high-skill and the intake is limited.

3

Get your OSHA 10 and lockout/tagout (LOTO) training — LOTO discipline is non-negotiable in millwright work. Failing to follow LOTO procedures on industrial machinery kills people. It will be drilled into you from day one.

4

Learn precision alignment — this is the millwright's core skill. Laser alignment of shafts, couplings, and bearings to tolerances measured in thousandths of an inch. Take the classroom seriously.

5

Learn rigging — installing 40-ton gearboxes and paper machine rolls requires knowing how to rig. ASME B30.9 rigging cert and Rigger Level II are worth pursuing.

6

Complete your apprenticeship and pursue industrial shutdowns — turnaround millwright work (paper mills, steel plants, food processing during scheduled shutdowns) pays premium rates. The weeks are long, the pay is large, and the travel is real.

What the Brochure Leaves Out.

Heavy travel for major industrial shutdowns. 'Turnaround' work is feast-or-famine.

Math-heavy. Tolerances are real — 0.001" matters here.

Confined-space and lockout/tagout (LOTO) discipline is non-negotiable.

Every state has different licensing requirements, exam providers, and code editions. Choose your state for the specific path in your market.
